Knee Replacement Surgery in Delhi : Procedure, Types And Advantages

Knee replacement also known by its surgical name “knee arthroplasty” or “knee surfing”. Where the damaged part of your knee is replaced by an artificial part or prosthesis (made up of metal alloys, polymers and high-grade plastics). The prosthesis is then attached with the thigh bone, shin bone and knee cap with the bone material such as an acrylic cement..

Knee replacement procedure-

Knee replacement surgery is a treatment for the damages and pains in the knees. The most common reason for the surgery is osteoarthritis issue which is caused by the breakdown of joint cartilage. It causes pain and limits down the movement of bones. Activities like walking, climbing stairs are very painful. Some more types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis that results from knee injury, which may also lead to degeneration of knees.

Knee replacement is commonly performed by giving general anesthesia to patient. The surgeon will start making an incision across the knee to access the knee cap for the replacement. The incision is usually about 4 to 6 inches long.

The initial part of your knee that is the patella also known as knee cap is rotated by the surgeon to view the actual part to be progressed under the surgery.

The first bone your surgeon will resurface is the femur also known as thigh bone. Once your surgeon has opened up your knee, he or she will make precise cuts using special instruments. The damaged part of your bone or cartilage is resurfaced by the artificial knee by cutting the end part of the femur bone and gently attaching the initial part of the artificial knee (femoral component). The Thigh . bone and the femoral component is attached by using bone cement to seal it into place.

The next bone your surgeon will access is tibia or shinbone. The surgeon will remove the damaged bone and cartilage from the top of the tibia and then shapes the bone to fit the metal and plastic tibial components. The bottom portion of the artificial knee is known as tibial tray which is attached to the tibia and placed into the position using bone cement. Then the surgeon will insert a polyethylene (medical- grade- plastic) to act as a support system between the tibial tray and femoral components. So that knee can bend or flex freely.

The additional bone cement might be used to flatten the patella and to returning your kneecap to its original position.  At the end, your surgeon will check by bending and performing some motions to ensure the surgical process is working correctly. If all goes well, the surgeon will close the incisions with the staple, stitches or bandage properly.

After that you can leave the hospital with your full leg without any pain.

Types of knee replacement surgeries are.

Total knee replacement surgery in Delhi: it involves replacement of all the three parts of the knee named medical compartment (inside aspect of the knee), the lateral compartment (outside aspect of the knee) and the patella femoral compartment (in front of the knee).
